FROM THE PRESIDENT NO.5 NOVEMBER 2016
DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to our No.1 team on winning Over 60s Division 1 and the John Hammer Trophy at
the National Seniors Cricket Championships in Perth.
After making the final on percentage, we defeated the strong Queensland team in a nail biting finish.
Man of the Match, Wayne Stokes and Trevor Saker added 26 runs for the last wicket to clinch
Victoria’s 5th Division 1 title in 11 years.
The team was impacted by injury with our 4 Australian selected players (Yallop, Bennett, Lanigan
and Selby) all unable to play. Into the team came Gary Ralph, Ron Lovel, Wayne Stokes and
evergreen, Ron Kasputtis and all performed admirably. Les Quarrell captained the side until injured
then Ken Baddeley took over the captaincy. The other players were Chris Carr, David Cordy, John
Porter, Trevor Saker, Ian Southall and Tim Spear. Well done to all who represented the team.
Well done also to our No. 1 Over 70’s side who made the final against a particularly strong
Queensland team. We batted well but were unable to break through the Queensland batting. Losing
Ron Kasputtis to the Over 60 team certainly weakened the bowling stocks but congratulations to Ian
Sharp and the side for their efforts.
Our other teams had mixed results with teams 3, 4, 6 and Over 70’s 2 all unfortunately losing their
third round games and costing them a spot in the final.
Recognition also to our Victorian umpires and especially to VOSCA Registrar, Ian Leach who as well
as entering the daily changes to sides on My Cricket, was appointed to Umpire the Over 60 Division 1
Overall a successful and enjoyable Championships, although a spate of injuries meant regular
changes to a number of our sides.
Thank you to our Captains and Team Managers for capably and conscientiously fulfilling your roles.
Thank you to the selectors (Rex Bennett, Barry Borlase, Ian Gibson and Les Quarrell) for taking the
time each day to review injuries and performances and select the teams. The four additions to the
depleted No.1 team was a master stroke!
And finally a very big thank you to Vice-President Operations and Chair of Selectors, Bill Dobson.
Many of you are already aware of the hours of work Bill put into his responsibilities both before and
during the Championships. Bill had to coordinate the daily selections and advise all impacted
persons and always performed these tasks professionally and calmly, regardless of the significant
impact on his personal time.

VETERANS CRICKET AUSTRALIA
At the National Board meeting in Perth, the new title of our national incorporated body was
confirmed as Veterans Cricket Australia. States will take action to reflect the word ‘Veterans’ in their
title and as such, we will become ‘Veterans Cricket Victoria’. The Executive committee will
determine the changes and timeline required to formalise this.
There will be separate Championships in 2017 for Over 60s and Over 70s. The Over 70s will be held
in Adelaide from 4-11 November whilst the Over 60s will be held in Canberra commencing on either
18 or 25 November. Advice will be issued once the date is confirmed.
Arrangements for Australia Over 60s to visit England in 2017 and England Over 70s to come to
Australia are yet to be finalised.
Dates have been confirmed for VOSCA tours to South Africa, Sri Lanka and Samoa and advices issued
to all members. There are still some spots left for Sri Lanka and Samoa so if interested, contact Joel
McGlynn or Derek Braidner respectively.
Likewise, information relating to the Echuca carnival commencing 19 March will be issued shortly.
I trust the weather is on the improve and we will now enjoy plenty of cricket in the months ahead.
